Seit heute gibt es 111 Elemente.
Das Element 111, das schwerste chemische Element, wurde am Freitag, den 17. November 2006 an der GSI auf den Namen Roentgenium mit dem chemischen Symbol Rg getauft.
Der Name ist zwar einem der ganz großen gewidmet, klingt aber trotzdem mal wieder sehr, sehr unhandlich. Da lobe ich mir die guten alten Zeiten, wo die Elemente noch nicht nach Personen benannt wurden. Und wenn dann wenigstens nach einer schön einsilbigen Göttin, wie zum Beispiel Helium.
Und seit fast genau einem Jahr fliegt dieser Link (gefunden via Languagehat) schon bei mir rum, der jetzt thematisch zumindest einigermaßen paßt. Da hat man nämlich nach zwölf langen Jahren endlich mal wieder ein neues IPA-Symbol eingeführt, das Ihr jetzt hier links sehen könnt.

Dr. Olson encountered this speech sound when he was living among the Mono people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. While studying Mono, he found very few publications discussing the labiodental flap, prompting him to publish his own research. Over seventy languages in Africa are reported to use the sound.
